Protect your asphalt with our top quality sealcoating. Our water resistant sealers will help insure asphalt protection against cracking, deterioration, crumbling and shrinkage. In addition sealcoating helps resist the elements that soften asphalt and restores the original black color while increasing the life of your pavement. Sealcoating can ultimately save you and estimated $127,000 over 15 years when looking at a 10,000-sq.-yd area of asphalt pavement.
Refined coal tar sealcoating materials
A byproduct of the coking process, refined coal tar is a mixture of thousands of chemicals. The advantage of refined coal tar is that it is a stable molecular structure. This means the chemicals resist destructive elements and chemicals. First introduced in the 1950s, refined coal tar has been used for many years to protect off-street pavements. Many times these are referred to as CTPE or coal tar pitch emulsions. This type of coating is water based and created by dispersing refined coal tar in combination with clay and water. CTPE includes resistant features and reinforcing effects of mineral fillers that create a barrier coating. This coating will help flex with the pavements movement and protect the asphalt from deteriorating elements.
Today many sealer manufacturers are producing asphalt-based sealers as well as asphalt/refined coal tar blends. These emulsions have most of the same properties as refined coal tar-based coatings. The key difference is the resistance to color fading due to ultraviolet degradation and petrochemicals. Asphalt is a derivative of petroleum so asphalt has a natural similarity to petrochemicals. With this being said it is easily dissolved by like chemicals. Asphalt emulsion-based seal coatings are made with soap emulsion or clay stabilized emulsions. The properties of clay emulsions can be controlled more effectively through the selection of ingredients.
Seal coaters have recognized some superior advantages of asphalt emulsion over refined coal tar sealers. User friendly has been a way that asphalt emulsion sealcoats have been described. They are practically odorless and do not irritate or burn the skin. Also those planning to seal airport runways must use refined coal tar-based sealcoating. The Federal Aviation Administration enforces this because the refined coal tar based sealcoatings offer greater resistance to jet fuel.
