How crack sealing prevents potholes and frost-heaves

Crack sealing prevents water from entering the sub-base of the asphalt. When water enters cracks or is improperly drained, it softens the supporting sub-base and leads to potholes and other deformations, like “alligatoring” and frost-heaves.

Winter accelerates this process due to freeze / thaw processes where water that is trapped in the asphalt sub-base freezes, expands, and pushes the pavement up – causing frost heaves. When warmer weather arrives, thawing causes the sub-base to contract and soften, leaving a void. Without support, the pavement ultimately begins to cave-in.

How Infrared Pothole Repair Recycled Old pavement into virtually new pavement

Using the infrared asphalt recycler, our crew warms the existing asphalt in and around the repair area to over 300°F, the same temperature that new asphalt is when manufactured at the plant.

We then take an asphalt rake and rake the asphalt as if it was brand new material. We can heat as large as a 6′ x 8′ (48′ sq.) or as small as a 2’x2′ (4’sq) area at a time. We can continually move the machine to efficiently tackle extra long areas.

Once the old pavement has been heated and raked, crews add new asphalt as needed to meet the grade and then compact the area with a vibratory roller. With JDK’s infrared method, you get a permanent patch without a seam. The infrared actually heats the adjacent area too, so there is no seam for water to get into.
